On the evening of July 26, 2023, Lt. Mike Wood with the Newberry Police Department was traveling South on SC 395 responding to a call. A tractor-trailer traveling East on SC 34 and Lt. Wood's vehicle collided at an intersection. Lt. Wood was taken to the hospital but later succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash.
A twenty-year law enforcement veteran, Lt. Wood is remembered as a hard worker who embodied community policing. Newberry Police Chief Goodman shared about how Lt. Wood established a walk-and-talk program where citizens and police would walk the neighborhood streets together. The only rule - They couldn't talk about work. It was a chance for relationships to grow and trust to be built.
Lt. Wood was a valued member of the Newberry Police Department and SC Law Enforcement community. He will be dearly missed. He is survived by his wife, Jennifer, and their two teenage sons. This fundraiser is being set up to support his family during this tragic time.
