Easley Police Department, EOW: 08-02-2023

On the morning of August 2, 2023, around 5 AM, the Easley Police Department received a call about a person experiencing a mental health crisis. The person was eventually located around 6 AM by two Easley Police Officers on the railroad tracks. While attempting to preserve the life of the person on the railroad track, Officer Matthew Hare was struck by the train. He did not survive.

Officer Matthew Hare was just 22 years old. He graduated from the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy in March 2023 and his career in law enforcement began just a few short months before he gave his life in service to his community.

Officer Hare is remembered as a hero for protecting and serving his community and for his efforts in saving the life of someone he did not know. This fundraiser has been established to support his family during this tragic time.

ABOUT THIS FUNDRAISER

The fundraiser is facilitated by Serve & Connect, a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization focused on igniting positive change through police-community partnerships. Serve & Connect has raised more than $800,000 for families of fallen officers in South Carolina. Serve & Connect was founded by Kassy Alia Ray in memory of her late husband, Officer Gregory Alia, who was killed in the line of duty on September 30, 2015. This fundraiser is endorsed by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Officers Association, the South Carolina Sheriff's Association, South Carolina Police Chiefs Association, South Carolina Fraternal Order of Police, and the Easley Police Department. 100% of the funds raised will be provided directly to Officer Matthew Hare's family. All donations are tax-deductible to the extent provided by law.
