In the early morning hours of Wednesday September 6, Lexington County Sheriff's Department deputies responded to a call of a home invasion. When deputies arrived at the scene, one attempted to enter the home. The suspect fired shots, and the deputy was hit by gunfire and backed out of the house.

The suspect got into the victim's car and plowed through the garage door, and officers began chasing his vehicle. The chase went for several miles down as the suspect was firing shots at officers as they were driving down the road.

Eventually, officers used a tire deflation device on the road to slow the vehicle, and the chase ended. However, when the suspect got out of the car, the suspect fired more shots at the officers, who then fired back. The suspect was killed.

Officers later confirmed that Dominque Walker was dead and the coroner said she'd been shot multiple times. An 8-year-old boy was inside the home during the ordeal. He was taken to the hospital as a precaution but was later released to his grandparent.

The brave deputy who attempted to enter the home was Master Deputy Jacob Smith. A seven-year law enforcement veteran, and a deputy with the Lexington County Sheriff's Department since 2018, Master Deputy Smith sustained an upper-body injury from the gunfire. He has successfully completed one surgery, with the potential for additional surgeries pending. His recovery is likely to take several months.

"We're very thankful Jacob is receiving the best care and support from his family and loved ones. As his work family, we will wrap our arms around him and his wife and stand with them as they travel the road to recovery", shared Sheriff Jay Koon. "Jacob has served his department and his county well."

Master Deputy Smith is a courageous hero who put his life in danger to protect those he serves. This fundraiser is established to raise money to support him and his wife and three small children aged 10, 4, and 1 during his recovery.

ABOUT THIS FUNDRAISER

The fundraiser is facilitated by Serve & Connect, a nonprofit (501c3) organization focused on igniting positive change through police-community partnerships. Since 2015, Serve & Connect has raised more than $800,000 for families of fallen officers in South Carolina. Serve & Connect was founded by Kassy Alia Ray in memory of her late husband, Officer Gregory Alia, who was killed in the line of duty on September 30, 2015. This fundraiser is endorsed by the South Carolina Troopers Association, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Officers Association, the South Carolina Sheriffs Association, the South Carolina Police Chiefs Association, the South Carolina Fraternal Order of Police, and the Lexington County Sheriffs Department. 100% of funds raised will be provided directly to Master Deputy Smith to support his recovery.
